Gorgeous Gorges in Switzerland

Gorges are a spectacular natural phenomena that always provide jaw dropping views, a roaring soundtrack of crashing water and a great way to spend a day hiking…without actually realising you’re hiking! There are many gorges or canyons dotted around the world, and can be found in places where there are plenty of hills or mountains. Some great gorges can be found around the Alps – particularly in Switzerland.

The ideal time to visit these places is in late Spring, Summer or Autumn – to get the best out of your trip! Here are some great gorges that can be found in the areas surrounding Verbier.

Gorges Du Durnand

Located in the municipality of Bovernier, you can access a wooden walkway above and to the side of the gorge for just 9 CHF! Watch the water flow beneath your feet as you climb the staircases and walk along the bridges. There are 330 steps in total that take approximately 1 hour to scale. Head here if waterfalls are your thing – there are 14 to see altogether!

The Trient Valley

Located in Valais, the Trient Valley is home to 3 main sites: Trient Gorges, Dailley Gorges and Tête-Noire Gorges. If you take a short detour you can also visit the Pissevache Waterfall with a height of 116m! The Gorges are viewable from wooden walkways, much like at Durnand, where you tread just 3m above the water below. Trient is just 8 CHF for entry and 15 CHF for Dailley.
These sites are great to visit for the views, the hikes and of course the refreshing beverage at the end, provided by one of the local cafes! Accessing them can be made a great adventure too, it’s quite common to rent a bike (an option is also to use an e-bike) in order to get around if you’re happy to make a day of it! If not, all these sites can be accessed by public transport or bus!
