Swimming with sharks is at the top of a lot of peoples’ Bucket List…but how can you guarantee you’re going to pick the best location?! Here at BackHackers, we have compiled an A-Z list of the sharkiest spots around that definitely won’t let you down on the fin front!
Australia: Fish Rock
This destination offers year-round diving opportunities. In this 120m cave you can swim with grey nurse sharks, wobbegong sharks and bull rays.
Bahamas: Tiger Beach, Grand Bahama
The best time to visit is between October and January in order to spot a whole array of sharks at this destination. From tiger sharks to hammerheads you’ll see them all through the crystal clear waters.
Costa Rica: Cocos Island
Another year-round destination is Cocos Island which is sometimes referred to as ‘the sharkiest place on Earth’. Here you can find hammerheads, Galápagos, silky, tiger, white tip reef and whale sharks.
Ecuador: Galapagos Islands
Visit this
destination between June and December in order to see the hammerheads and whale
sharks.
Egypt: The Brothers Islands, Red Sea
These beautiful little islands are home to whitetips, greytips, silvertips, grey reef and hammerhead sharks. Visit here any time of year to explore the underwater wreck sites teeming with fish.
Fiji: Beqa Lagoon
Visit between July and September to
swim with blacktips, whitetips, grey reefs, silvertips, tawnies, sickle fins,
lemons, tigers and bulls. Discover the beauty of these creatures as you
navigate around crystal clear waters.
Indonesia: Cenderawasih Bay
This is yet another year-round destination for not only shark spotting, but also for swimming with turtles, dolphins and dugongs.
Mexico: Isla de Guadalupe
July to November are the best times to
visit this destination. Here you can find the mother of all sharks: the great
white.
Mozambique: Cabo San Sebastian
Whale and bull
sharks can be spotted here. And the best time to catch them is between November
and March.
Philippines: Malapascua
This desination is home to the
thresher shark, which you can see on a year-round basis.
Scotland: Oban
Not quite as tropical as some of the
other suggestions on this list, but here you will find basking sharks, whales,
dolphins, otters and seals! Between May and September are the best months to visit
to avoid absolutely freezing to death.
USA: Rhode Island
This destination is great for mako and
blue sharks. Head here between June and September for the best sightings.
