Austria is nestled in the southern part of Central Europe, neatly set against the East Alps. Home to the amazing city of Vienna, which houses approximately one quarter of the entire country’s population; and holder of one of the oldest national flags in the world…Austria may be small but it certainly shouldn’t be underestimated. Here are BackHackers’ Top 4 Places in Austria that you definitely shouldn’t miss…
Innsbruck
This city has a lot going on, with plenty of sites to see, offering a well rounded ski resort and also located not too far from St Anton for those who want more of a winter challenge. This city has been home to winter sports for quite some time, even having hosted the Winter Olympics twice. However, a summer here would also be a summer well spent with year round activities such as seeing the sites of the Golden Roof or climbing the clock tower to get excellent views of the city. You can also make your way up to the Alpine Zoo via cable car if the views aren’t quite high enough from the tower! Here you’ll be able to marvel at the city and surrounding area for miles while enjoying a tipple at the local ice bar.
Klagenfurt
Found in the rural southern province of Carinthia, which borders Slovenia and Italy, Klagenfurt is Austria’s natural playground. Enjoy water sports activities such as sailing, windsurfing and water-skiing on lake Wöthersee. Or perhaps scuba diving, kayaking and canyoning is more your thing. The limestone canyons in the south are great for exploring on foot as well, if you’d rather stay dry!
Salzburg
Make sure to check this city out in July and August – the months when Mozart’s birthplace comes alive with music! The Salzburg festival is an annual occurrence and is one event definitely not to miss. Head to the House of Mozart to view the beautiful open air theatre cut into the cliffs. For truly stunning views, take a lift to the top of the mountain where you’ll be able to cast your eyes over Salzburg and River Salzach. Rich in culture as well as natural beauty, the city of Salzburg is the perfect balance between city life and mountainous adventure.
Vienna
If you wanted to follow the life of Mozart, bear in mind that although born in Salzburg, Mozart had some of his most successful years in Vienna. This capital city definitely has the flavour of art, music and culture – which some say is organised just like an onion. Use the tram system to get to the key attractions, mostly in the Innere Stadt – make sure to keep an eye out for all the neo-classical architecture and the Gardens of Schloss Schönbrunn is definitely one not to miss.
Honourable Mention…
Our honourable mention for Austria goes to St Anton! As mentioned above, this little ski town is about an hours’ train ride from bigger cities like Innsbruck and is home to some absolutely amazing ski and snowboarding opportunities. Not for the faint of heart, this resort offers incredible off piste and many black runs… make sure to stop at KK’s or Moose on your way down for some unforgettable Austrian Apres!
