Chilling in Chile

Chile offers some of the most diverse terrain in the world – all packed into one beautiful country. From the Andes, to National Parks, vibrant cities and vast deserts, Chile certainly has a lot on offer for any traveller. Here’s a list of BackHackers’ favourite places to visit in Chile…

Torres Del Paine National Park

The National Park of Torres del Paine sits in Chile’s Patagonia region. It’s home to absolutely breathtaking mountains, stunningly blue icebergs and rich grasslands. If heading here, make sure to visit the three granite towers and the horn-shaped peaks known as Cuernos del Paine.

Santiago

Santiago is Chile’s capital city and is located in a valley bordered by the snowy Andes. Head here to indulge in the hustle and bustle of Chile’s culture, history and architecture.

Valparaíso

The port city of Valparaíso is certainly a sight to see, with its quirky multicoloured houses that line the cliffs. Head here for some history, museums, architecture and one-off Pacific views.

Easter Island

The remote volcanic Easter Island in Polynesia is actually a Chilean territory. You will probably recognise it from its archaeological sites, including roughly 900 statues (called moai), which were created by inhabitants between the 13th and 16th centuries.

Atacama Desert

The Atacama Desert covers a vast area (1000 km) just west of the Andes mountains. It is one of the driest places on Earth, receiving less rainfall than the polar deserts. Head here for an almost alien experience, with its eerie emptiness exaggerated by the seemingly infinite landscape.

Laguna Lejía

The salt lake of Laguna Lejía can be found in the Altiplano of the Antofagasta Region of northern Chile. Overshadowed by volcanoes (Chiliques, Lascar, Aguas Calientes and Acamarachi), the shallow lake reflects its formidable surroundings, while a lava flow forms its southern shore .

Saltos De Petrohue

Petrohué Waterfalls can be found in the upper reach of Petrohué River in Chile and sit inside the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park. With its largest drop of 3m, follow the falls from the Petrohué River to Todos los Santos Lake for some awesome views of not only the falls, but the surrounding vegetation and wildlife.
