Delights of Helsinki

This might seem like a quirky choice to some, but one should never underestimate the adventures to be had in a distant land. Helsinki is the perfect destination for a taste of the Baltic world meshed with modern cosmopolitanism. Being Finland’s southern capital, you’ll of course find plenty of culture here such as institutions like the National Museum, Kiasma and the Parliament House. But there’s much more to discover… why not take a look at BackHackers’ top delights of Helsinki…

Something Smells Fishy

Why not visit the local fish market loved by foodies at one of Helsinki’s focal points: the Kauppatori (Market Square). At the south side of the market you’ll find fresh snacks served all day.

All Ages

Take a walking tour of the city and let its history envelope you. Set this against the backdrop of modern architecture and trailblazing style (not to mention the jaw dropping natural landscape surrounding it) and you’ve got yourself the perfect mix of past and present.

All Year

This city is a year-round destination. Visit during its crisp and frosty winters and have yourself a winter wonderland or go during its seemingly endless summer. Whenever you visit, this city has plenty to offer whatever time of year you chose to go. FYI winter temperatures can drop to as low as -50 C, so pack those layers!

Sauna Seduction

Finland is home to approximately 3.5 million saunas – which means there’s plenty to go around when you need warming up. Head to two of Helsinki’s leading saunas: Lövly and Kotiharijun for a soothing sauna session.

Lovely Liquor

If visiting in the winter, you may need to seek refuge at a pub to get out of the freezing temperatures. Why not indulge in a lonkero (usually gin and grapefruit soda) to warm up your insides. You might even be able to play a board game to while away the hours!

Local Delicacies

Salmon stew, lingonberry pie and reindeer are Helsinki’s local delicacies. Whether or not you’re up for trying them is another thing. Reindeer can be sampled in the form of grilled fillets, while a salmon stew will infuse your senses with the taste of the waterfront. If you’d rather not consume either of the above, opt for the lingonberry pie: northern berries which taste like autumn combined with a pre-emptive excitement of Christmas spice.

What Not To Miss…

Suomenlinnaan

An 18th century sea fortress – access this baby by ferry!

Helsinki Cathedral

For a taste of the neoclassical, head to this grand design of the 19th century.

Temppeliaukio Church

You may even visit it as a popular concert venue as opposed to a church. However you visit it, enjoy its beauty as it’s excavated into rock.

Uspenski Catheral

For a sight of sheer grandeur, visit this Russian designed building. Reminiscent of the lavish and ornate buildings viewable in Russia itself.

Seurasaari

Head to this wooden island, which is home to an open-air museum, for plenty of sights, sounds and smells. Here you are also welcome to indulge in your most natural state at the clothing-optional beach.

Linnanmäki

This amusement park has more than 50 rides and coasters, including a monorail and a tower which is home to some of the best views in Helsinki.

Esplanadi

For summertime travels, this is a great green space for your picnic. Often there are live performances, beautifully set against the avenues of trees.
