The Best of New Zealand

Ah New Zealand… home to some of the greatest landscapes, natural beauty and amazing wildlife around. There is so much to discover across these islands – but how to choose?! BackHackers have compiled a list of must-see’s during your visit to this beautiful land, although be aware this list just skims the surface of all the wonders New Zealand has to offer…

Lake Tekapo

Lake Tekapo is part of a UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve – which means it is one of the top spots for star gazing! To find this lovely little gem of a lake, you’ll need to drive 3 hours south-west of Christchurch, which is in the Mackenzie Basin. Head here to see the gorgeous hues of the turquoise waters set against the beautiful backdrop of the Southern Alps.

Auckland

Auckland is one of New Zealand’s best cities! Visit the well known Sky Tower for amazing views of Viaduct Harbour, or head to Auckland Domain, (the city’s oldest park) which is based around an extinct volcano. If you’re near Downtown, Mission Bay Beach is also a must-visit!

Roys Peak

Roy’s Peak is a mountain in New Zealand that sits between Wanaka and Glendhu Bay. Take a day-long walk up to the peak of Mount Aspiring/Tititea – you’ll get the best views on this trail!

Hooker Valley Track

You may have already heard of this walking trail, given that it is the most popular throughout the Mount Cook National Park. The track is 5km long with a climb of 100m so is a relativity easy going track. With views like this, a short stroll in the valley sounds like a great way to spend your day!

Queenstown

Some people refer to Queenstown as the ‘adventure town’ of New Zealand -and rightly so! Perched on Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown certainly does have a lot of adventure to offer – for instance, there is bungee jumping off Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge, jet-boating on the Shotover and Dart Rivers, and skiing at Coronet Peak in the winter. However, if this is all a bit much for you, the region also has fantastic vineyards and historic mining towns if you fancy an easier sight-seeing day!

Wenderholm Regional Park

Find this gem of a regional park sat between the Puhoi and Waiera River. It’s actually the first regional park of the Auckland Region and features a homestead known as Couldrey House.

Milford Sound

Milford Sound is mainly known for its Mitre Peak, lush rainforests and striking waterfalls (such as Stirling and Bowen falls). Head here to see some local wildlife, such as penguins and dolphins! You can also head to Milford Discovery Centre and Underwater Observatory to catch a glimpse of rare black coral and other marine life.
